POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT # 2010-08

TEMPORARY Investigator

 

 

The Federal Public Defender for the District of Vermont is accepting applications for a full-time temporary Investigator, to be employed for one year plus one day. The federal defender organization operates under authority of the Criminal Justice Act (CJA), 18 U.S.C. ยง3006A, to provide defense services to indigent persons in federal criminal cases upon appointment by the United States District Court.

 

Requirements: Five years investigation/mitigation experience (e.g. criminal defense, journalism, mental health, social work) and excellent verbal and written skills required. College degree preferred. Strong organizational skills and computer proficiency required. Ability to travel extensively, including over night and out of state.

 

Duties: Investigator duties include, but are not limited to: obtaining and verifying documents and evidence, interviewing clients and witnesses, reporting findings, and assisting attorneys in trial and sentencing preparation.

 

Selection Criteria: The successful candidate will demonstrate initiative, good judgment and possess strong analytical skills; have experience in computer-assisted legal research and word-processing; and a reputation for personal and professional integrity. The successful candidate will possess the ability to communicate effectively with clients, witnesses, colleagues, staff, and courtpersonnel. Criminal defense investigative and/or paralegal experience strongly preferred.

 

Salary and Benefits: Judicial Salary Plan Grade 11 - 14 ($57,408 - $96,690 ) commensurate with experience. Employees may not engage in other full-time employment or litigation assistance for hire. The position is in the excepted service and does not carry the tenure rights of the competitive Civil Service. The position includes regular Government employment benefits including health and dental insurance. Salary is payable only by Electronic Funds Transfer (direct deposit). The successful candidate will be subject to an FBI background check as a condition of employment.
